Be Aware of Equinox Driving Dangers, Says AAA

Phoenix, Ariz. Sept. 22, 2010. The fall equinox will take place this week, which means the sun will rise and set exactly due east and west. This means that the sun will appear largest during the heavy commute times of sunrise and sunset, posing a threat to Arizona motorists.

“Because Arizona roads are built on a grid system, the glare caused by the fall equinox can reduce a motorist’s vision,” said AAA Arizona Communications and Public Affairs Director Linda Gorman. “This can impact a motorist’s
ability to make out traffic signals, signs, pedestrians and other vehicles, thereby increasing their risk of collision.”

To help Arizona motorists commute safely through the fall equinox, AAA Arizona would like to offer the following tips:

  • Slow down. One of the best ways to combat glare is to increase one’s reaction time, which can be achieved by reducing speed.
  • Utilize sun blocking/shading tools that can provide protection for your eyes and prevent glare, such as sunglasses and sun visors.
  • Keep your windshield clean. Don’t drive with a dirty, cracked or pitted windshield as the windshield plays a vital role in ensuring clear vision of the road.
  • Consider alternative routes to limit east/west routes. In addition, alter commute times to avoid driving during sunrise and/or sunset.

“Motorists who are aware of equinox dangers and know how to react to them can greatly reduce their risk of being involved in a collision,” added Gorman.
